Alzheimer’s Association Support Group Meetings in Mt. Pleasant

Asona Home Health supports Mt. Pleasant Alzheimer’s caregiver groups by providing on-site respite care so families can connect, learn, and feel supported.
Supporting Caregivers Through Local Alzheimer’s Support Groups

I wonder if there is a family that hasn’t been touched by Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. In-home care, as you might imagine, we see it often. When asked if we cared to help with an Alzheimer’s support group in our area, we were happy to help.

Definition:

“A support group is a gathering of people who share common experiences, challenges, or conditions to provide each other with encouragement, understanding, and practical advice in a safe and judgment-free environment. They offer a place to connect with others who have ‘walked in your shoes,’ reducing feelings of isolation.”

Susan Evans (Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter, Program Manager) explained to us that our role would be respite care, on-site.  Since caring for people is what we do every day, that was a perfect job for Asona.

This confidential support group is for anyone taking care of another person, be it their spouse, friend, or family member. While they attend the meeting, the person being cared for can spend time with Asona caregivers in a nearby room. We will have an idea of the particular needs and interests of the people spending time with us. Those attending the group can be confident that their person is comfortable and having a good experience.

Dawn Blue, one of our home care managers, does a great job of making people feel comfortable and welcome.  Dawn is a very experienced caregiver. She has been with us for several years. She enjoys the time she spends at the Alzheimer’s support group meetings. A second caregiver works alongside Dawn at the meetings. Depending on who’s available, it could be Brianna Pearson or Brook Dintaman.

Brandise Leonard, of the Isabella Commission on Aging, manages the group. This support group in Mt. Pleasant has been meeting for about a year and a half. Brandise deserves credit for the success and the continued growth of the group meetings. She takes the time to get the word out and to keep things running smoothly.

The Alzheimer’s support group is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter. They meet on the third Monday of every month at 12 pm (noon), at The Isabella County Commission on Aging, 2200 S. Lincoln Rd, Mt Pleasant, MI 48858.
