Defining Health Care Terms

Home Care is unskilled nursing and includes duties such as grooming, bathing, housekeeping, errands, medication reminders, and/or companionship.

Home Health Care is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home for an illness or injury. Home health care helps you get better, regain your independence, and become as self-sufficient as possible. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).

Examples of skilled Home Health Care services include:

  • Wound care for pressure sores or a surgical wound

  • Patient and caregiver education

  • Intravenous or nutrition therapy

  • Injections

  • Monitoring serious illness and unstable health status

Skilled Nursing Facility  a type of nursing home recognized by the Medicare and Medicaid systems as meeting long term health care needs for individuals who have the potential to function independently after a limited period of care.

Assisted Living is housing for elderly or disabled people that provides nursing care, housekeeping, and prepared meals as needed.

Nursing Home is a private institution providing residential accommodations with health care, especially for elderly people. A nursing home is a place for people who don't need to be in a hospital but can't be cared for at home. Most nursing homes have nursing aides and skilled nurses on hand 24 hours a day. Some nursing homes are set up like a hospital. The staff provides medical care, as well as physical, speech and occupational therapy.
